Decorating for men — a plan, not Pinterest

How men decorate a home: pick a lane, kill the clutter, get a buy list. Industrial, mid-century, dark modern, farmhouse — one system for the whole place.

1. Pick one style for the whole home

Industrial, mid-century, dark modern, farmhouse, or after dark. Name it in five words or the shopping list will fight itself. One metal story. One wood story. Soft goods last.

2. Photo the room

Stand in the doorway. Capture what is actually there — not the Instagram crop. A plan written against a photo beats a mood board every time.

3. Keep / kill list

Keep architecture with weight. Kill the matching suite, the neon, the fake plant army. If it does not earn a place in the photo, it leaves.

4. Buy 6 items max first

Desk or sofa, one good light, rug, closed storage, one textile, one small discipline item (cable clips, blotter). Accessories after the bones work.

5. Room pages that go deeper

6-item starter kit (across rooms)

  1. One primary seating or sleep piece — sofa, task chair, or bed frame with weight. $200–800
  2. Large rug — front legs on it; edge must show. $90–250
  3. Warm task / floor light — brass or matte black, 2700K. $55–180
  4. Closed storage — cabinet, nightstand, or credenza. Hide the mess. $80–350
  5. One textile — wool throw or performance fabric pillow, not a pile. $25–90
  6. Cable / clutter discipline — clips, blotter, or label kit. $8–30
